To put it simply, skin health is the foundation, and beauty is the decoration on top of the foundation. The essence of the two is the relationship between "basic rigid needs" and "upper-level optimization". They can neither be separated nor replace each other.
I have been working in a skin care center for nearly 8 years, and I have seen too many people confuse the boundaries between the two. Not long ago, a little girl who just went to college, her face was covered with inflammation and acne, and it was so red that it was about to burst with pus. She clutched a guide from a certain book and asked me if she could do a fruit acid peel and whitening. She said, "It's all about the face anyway, so we can save time by doing it together." In fact, this is a failure to understand the core difference between the two: the criteria for judging skin health are all physiological - the barrier is intact, the water and oil metabolism is normal, and there is no pathological damage. It will not redden or sting when exposed to cold or heat. A small pimple will scab and heal in two or three days. Even if you are naked, your skin will be comfortable to the touch. This has reached the skin's passing line, which is the bottom line that cannot be shaken by any beauty program. The essence of beauty is the "icing on the cake": you want your skin tone to be more even, the dry lines at the corners of your eyes to be lighter, and your jawline to be clearer. These needs will not affect the normal function of the skin, but are all for a better look and a more youthful appearance, which are bonus points above the passing line.
There are indeed two extreme voices in the industry. One says that "all beauty treatments are IQ taxes, as long as the skin is healthy." The other says that "beauty is omnipotent, and even a bad face can be saved with medical beauty projects."
But the two are never antagonistic, but are tied more tightly than many people think. Last month, a client who was over 30 years old came to me for Thermage treatment. I first performed a skin test on her and found that her skin barrier was so thin that it turned red when the instrument probe was lightly rubbed, and she also had some signs of mild seborrheic dermatitis. She was quite unhappy at first, thinking that I was neglecting my business, but I waited until her inflammation subsided and her skin tolerance improved before I did it again. The energy was able to reach a level suitable for her. Not only was the firming effect better than she expected, but there were no side effects of darkening or stinging as others said. You see, without a healthy skin foundation, beauty treatments will not only produce no results, but will put extra burden on the skin, and may even destroy the already fragile foundation. On the other hand, choosing the right beauty products can actually help maintain skin health. For example, insisting on daily gentle repair care and strict sun protection can actually reduce the damage to the skin barrier caused by ultraviolet rays and external stimulation. It is much safer than doing nothing and relying on your skin to take care of it.
To put it bluntly, it is the same as decorating a house. If the wall leaks and the wall covering falls off, don't rush to put up wall coverings and install chandeliers. Fix the leak first, otherwise no matter how expensive the decoration is, it will be ruined in half a month. Once the house itself is strong, you can decorate it in whatever style you want, and the effect will be doubled. When I usually make plans for clients, I always adjust their health first and then talk about their beauty needs. After all, when we mess with our face, we can’t make it more sensitive and fragile, right? Beauty should be based on comfort, ease and health in order to last.
