Tummy ache and period cramps in early pregnancy may feel similar, but they have different causes and symptoms. Abdominal pain in early pregnancy may be related to uterine enlargement, stretched ligaments, or threatened miscarriage, while dysmenorrhea is usually caused by excessive secretion of prostaglandins or endometriosis.
In early pregnancy, the uterus gradually expands to adapt to the growth of the fetus, which may cause dull pain or pulling sensation in the lower abdomen. This pain is mostly intermittent and mild. Some pregnant women may experience slight vaginal bleeding or breast tenderness, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. If the pain continues to worsen or regular uterine contractions occur, you need to be alert to abnormalities such as threatened miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. The pain of dysmenorrhea is mostly concentrated 1-2 days before menstruation, manifesting as spasmodic cramping in the lower abdomen, often accompanied by backache, nausea and other symptoms. The pain gradually relieves after the menstrual blood is discharged. Primary dysmenorrhea is associated with elevated prostaglandin levels, while secondary dysmenorrhea may be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease or adenomyosis.
If abdominal pain in early pregnancy is accompanied by bright red bleeding, dizziness, or radiating pain to the shoulder, there may be a risk of rupture of an ectopic pregnancy. If patients with dysmenorrhea experience non-menstrual pain or dyspareunia, they need to be diagnosed with endometriosis. Both can be identified through ultrasound examination. If abdominal pain during pregnancy requires additional testing of blood HCG and progesterone levels.
It is recommended that pregnant women avoid strenuous exercise and get adequate rest. If they experience persistent abdominal pain, they should seek medical attention promptly. Women with dysmenorrhea can relieve their symptoms with hot compresses, and if necessary, use ibuprofen sustained-release capsules or drospirenone ethinylestradiol tablets and other drugs as directed by your doctor. Pay attention to recording pain characteristics and accompanying symptoms on a daily basis to provide a reference for doctors to make diagnosis.
