The core feature of cognitive health in the elderly is that degenerative loss and compensatory growth occur in parallel. Individual differences are far greater than group commonalities brought about by age. There is no completely unified "elderly cognitive template".
In the three years I have been doing cognitive intervention services in the community, I have come across too many examples that break stereotypes: 76-year-old Uncle Li can't remember whether he took antihypertensive medicine in the morning, but he can fix broken fitness equipment for the community by turning his head and looking at the drawings. Even the maintenance master of the property management company has to come over to ask him about his skills.; The 68-year-old Aunt Chen has not figured out how to make a video call with a smartphone after half a month of learning. However, if there are conflicts between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law or neighborhood disputes in the community, she can smooth over the emotions of both parties with just a few words. She can explain the truth more clearly than anyone else.
Don't think that this is an isolated case. Research on cognition in the elderly in recent years has long overturned the single conclusion that "the brain doesn't work well as you get older." In the past, it was assumed that cognition in old age was a general decline, but now it is discovered that cognitive function itself is divided into modules. Fluid intelligence, which is related to reaction speed and temporary memory, will naturally decline with age. However, crystallized intelligence, which is formed by accumulation of experience and logical precipitation, will not only not decline, but also for many elderly people who often use their brains, this part of their abilities will continue to rise until they are 80 years old. Decreased fluid intelligence is not a bad thing. The brains of the elderly process information slowly. In fact, they are like old drivers who have been driving for more than ten years. They will not slam on the accelerator like young people who just got their books. They will check several more layers of information at every step, making them less prone to mistakes. You rarely see the elderly being deceived by fake "winning text messages" at first glance. On the contrary, many young people fall into the trap without paying attention. In fact, the cognitive decision-making of the elderly is more stable.
Of course, there is still a lot of controversy in the academic community about the boundaries of cognitive decline in the elderly: one group has conducted large-sample group tracking and believes that as long as it is natural aging, the decline of fluid intelligence such as working memory and executive function is an inevitable trend, but the decline rate of different people may vary by more than ten years.; The other group tracks the cognitive data of centenarians and finds that nearly 30% of the elderly have cognitive functions that are the same as those in middle age until they are over 90 years old. They can even learn new skills such as calligraphy and smartphone operation from scratch without any obvious general decline.
In fact, when doing cognitive screening, we can also find that those elderly people who maintain good cognitive status generally have cognitive scenarios that they often use: the elderly who love to play chess have good logical computing ability, the elderly who love to dance square dance shows have online memory and coordination skills, and the elderly who lecture their grandchildren every day can express their logic more clearly than many young people. To put it bluntly, senile cognition is like a commonly used farm tool. The place you hold it in your hand every day and use it will always be bright and easy to use. It is easy to rust when you throw it in a corner where it is not used. It is not as fragile as everyone thinks.
